But the design of the Seba Tower near the Corniche seems to have tackled a different side of life in the desert – the mirage.
The building carries what appears to be its own blurred shadow, giving the exterior a swimming, hazy look.
The secret, says Ghazi Awad, the managing partner of GA Architects and Engineers, is in the balconies.
“The balconies are the detail that give the building that curving shape,” says Mr Awad, whose company is supervising work on the building.
“The core behind the curvatures is a straight building but with the balconies, which move in all four directions, we were able to do something different.
“They are a type of sunscreen … and they give residents that option of being outside in a country where you can easily do that for at least seven months of the year. Plus, of course, they give the building the dancing shape.
“I like to call it the moving or dancing tower. There is something elegant and feminine about it.”
The US architectural firm Hillier came up with the design concept and GA Architects and Engineers were given the task of making those drawings a reality.
The official press release from SEBA Developments regarding the SEBA Tower in Abu Dhabi:
Seba Properties unveiled one of its spectacular developments “Seba Tower”, an architectural marvel that will enhance the skyline of the capital and set the bar for innovative urban design.
The AED 600 million mixed-use tower is strategically located in the city’s most prestigious address. Over 262,000 square feet of office and retail space and 316 luxurious residential apartments will be ready for rent by mid 2010. The unique design of this 50 stories silhouette will be visible from miles around.
Curved bands will wrap around the tower in the form of balconies offering breathtaking views of the sea and the famous Abu Dhabi Corniche. The curvatures will be softly illuminated projecting flashing “bands of light” against the sky to further emphasize the spectacular structure.
“We trust that “Seba Tower” will be a remarkable landmark in Abu Dhabi and will contribute to the surrounding community by pushing the envelope of contemporary architecture,” said Rabih Karam, Chief Operating Officer.
Seba Tower is elegantly and functionally planned. The superior IT standards, the latest in cable management technology and the high speed elevators are designed to meet the highest international office building codes. A rooftop terrace including a health club and an outdoor pool will provide residents with a luxurious lifestyle. An excess of 900 parking spaces will be exclusively dedicated to the tenants and their visitors.
